10 Year Reading List

 Nick's 10 Year Reading List

To be completely honest, I'm not the biggest reader, but I do hope that will change. Maybe, by making this list I will force myself to read something that will force me to actually learn, and something that will have an impact on my life. The 10 books in this list will hopefully help me grow, and help me tackle issues I deal with in my day to day life.

#1: Holy Bible

Saying I want to read the Bible is a little outlandish, because it is a daunting task. Back in sophomore year, when I started to really recognize my faith, I wanted to start reading the Bible from the very beginning. I believe that has something to do with why I have been so on and off with reading the Bible, so to be specific I would like to focus on reading specific books that will help me, such as Psalms or Proverbs to help me grow in faith, or James or Matthew to help me resist temptations. Although this is a 10 year plan, this is something that I would want to continue throughout my entire life, not just to read and be done with.

#2: How To Stop Procrastinating

Procrastination is an issue that I have struggled with throughout my entire life, especially in high school. For whatever reason, as my workload grew, my procrastination habits grew as well. When I get to college I will have a lot on my plate; division 1 soccer, and a high demanding major. Thinking about it now, I don't know how I'll have time to do anything. I won't be able to get away with sitting around doing nothing all day, and then pushing the important things to the final seconds.

#3: Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals

Time management. Two words my Dad is always saying that I despise. This is another issue I have that I don't like to admit, but I am not the greatest at managing my time. Occasionally I tend to push things off, or leave myself to do too much at one time. This causes a lot of issues in the quality of my work, and it can lead to me not getting things done. Although I understand that reading this book won't just magically fix all my time management issues, but I think reading some things in this book would help me apply things to my life.

#4: Beginners Guide to the Stock Market

I always look to set myself up for a better future, whether that's studying so I can get into a good school, or working hard so things in the future become easier, but I feel like I have lacked financially. Throughout my childhood my dad has always talked about the stock market, and how investing money is making money work for you, but it's never something I have put effort into understanding. I was given some money to invest for my 18th birthday, and it remains unused because I just have no clue what to do with it. I would love to learn soon, and have my money work for me.

#5: The Science of Athletic Performance

Moving onto the next stage of my life, I will need to take care of my body more than ever. Being a division 1 athlete will be very stressful on my body, and I will suffer a lot if I do not take the necessary steps to take care of my body. Fortunately, I will have people and facilities to help me with this, but I want to be my own person. I would like to be independent enough to fully understand my own body, and know exactly what I want.

#6: Sport and Physical Activity for Mental Health

Throughout my entire sports career, I have been through several different hardships, whether that's not playing, not getting the minutes I deserve, being the best on the team and playing every minute, or being the worst on the team. Throughout all of this, I never suffered from any sort of issues with confidence or mental health. Although I've never suffered, I understand how real it can be. I know that going into college it will be a whole new level, and I might not play at all. The amount of stress on me is something that I defintely will have never felt before, so I want to be prepared for it.

#7: Rich Dad Poor Dad

This is a book that I have seen in the shelves of my house throughout my entire life. It belongs to my Dad, but I am almost positive he hasn't read a single page. This book is about financial literacy, and this is something I would want to read in my senior year of college, or as I exit college. The spending habits I have today are definetely not sustainable, and I will have to be much smarter when I start work and I have real money.

#8: Hunger Games Series

These books are books that I hope to read once I develop a love for reading, and I begin to read out of pure enjoyment. At some point in my life, I want to stop reading because I have to, or because I was told to, and I want to start reading for personal pleasure, like I did when I was younger. When I do, I want to read some of the most popular books of all time, to see what the hype is all about.

#9: Harry Potter Series (specifically Sorcerer's Stone)

The reasoning behind wanting to read this book is similar to the Hunger games. But in addition to that, I have watch a lot of the Harry Potter movies, and I have really loved all of them I would like to read the book to see how the plot differs, and to see if I would still get the same amount of pleasure out of the story.

#10: The Great Gatsby

Thought this might be cheating a bit, I need to re-read The Great Gatsby at some point in my life. When I read it the first time, I read it with a bit of a strain as it was an assignment, I had to pull meanings out of it, and it felt like I couldn't really enjoy it as much as I should've. With the amount we have talked about this book in both AP Lang and AP Lit since reading it, and the amount of references I see to this book outside of the classroom, I would love to re-read this book and see if I can notice anything different the second time around, or if my understanding of the story changes.
