Experiencing Music

                          Experiencing Music

Experiencing poetry can mean many things. To some that means what we do in class, whether thats read poetry, or listen to poetry. As most might agree, listening to poetry is much easier than reading it, and we might not be aware of how often we listen to poetry. In my humble opinion, music is the best form of poetry. The way artists are able to make songs that have each lyric filled with importance, a deeper meaning, and all while sounding good is something that always appeals to me.

This blog brings me back to 10th grade when I had to do an analysis on a Drake song and I chose 'Fair Trade'. This time, I would like to analyze one specific line of this song. "Mama used to be on disability but gave me this ability and now she walkin' with her head high and her back straight". This lyric is a perfect example of poetry in music. Something that can be listened through, or even rehearsed without being understood. Drake was born and raised in Toronto only by his mother, who relied on disability payments as she was unable to work. He then mentions how she gave him an ability, and talks about how she walks perfectly now, with full ability.

In one short sentence that lasts just over 5 seconds we learn about Drake's childhood situation, his mother's hardships, how she set him up for success, and how he repaid her afterwards. He does this all in the flow and rhythm of the song, without missing a beat. To me, this is a type of poetry that is unmatched.
