Our Land

Throughout this week, we frequently visited the topic of ownership. We were asked about the meaning of ownership. After reading a very well developed essay from another student about their opinion, I began to form my own thoughts and decision on the idea of ownership. First, to better understand it I think it is important that we step back, and thing about the ICE synthesis I completed earlier in the week. Although I don't remember what the prompt stated in its exact words, it asked me on my thoughts about what  a home is. Throughout the majority of my essay, I spoke about how home is not the physical structure of your house, but it is about the community in which it is placed. While searching my thoughts, I came to the conclusion that although ironic, it is easier to establish a home whilst relocating frequently, as you better understand the comforts of a community, and the significance of connections and ties. The question posed about ownership was similar. Ownership is not in reference to the material things you own, but to the combination of things that make you who you are. Throughout the story 'Biddawi' by Mohed Altrad, we can see how their ownership of Palestine, is a huge part of who they are even though they do not own Palestine. They are quoted several times throughout the story claiming Palestine as 'our land'. The country is not something they own, but it is something that makes them who they are.

  1. I like the reference to a real world issue! I I think your perspective that ownership is not only about material. Things is very eye-opening and makes me reflect on what makes up who I am and my community.
